Hartwood Community Development Group is a registered charity (SC050371) and is managed by 3 Trustees and supported by members and volunteers. The group fundraises for the provision and organisation of recreational facilities in Hartwood with the object of improving the health and wellbeing of inhabitants. The group has a keen interest in promoting and enhancing the environment in which we live.
Hartwood is a small rural village in North Lanarkshire with approximately 100 houses and 300 inhabitants. Hartwood was home to a large psychiatric hospital which operated as a self-sufficient community with staff houses, a farm, reservoir, farm, train line and cemetery. The Hospital closed in 1998 after 103 years of existence when Care in the Community Act was introduced. The iconic towers of the main hospital, the nurses home and one staff home still exists within the large grounds, albeit very much in disrepair.
We work in partnership, and have affiliations with, various other organisations including:
ScotRail – Adopt A Station Scheme
The group adopted Hartwood Train Station in 2020 and has several volunteers who look after the 2 platforms all year round. A local artist, John Gibney, has 2 prints of his original artwork on view on Platform 1. The paintings depict 2 local iconic buildings – the towers of the former psychiatric hospital and the large nurses home building.
In 2022 we will continue to look after the barrels, planters and troughs that are in situ with bedding plants, bulbs and shrubs. We also will be working to clear some of the rubble at the entrance to the station and generally tidy up this area. Watch out for a fairy garden soon!
We are proud members of DTAS who offer the group support, advice and networking opportunities which combine community-led initiatives with an enterprising approach to best serve the needs of communities.
We are proud members of Keep Scotland Beautiful and uphold their aims of combating climate change, reducing litter and waste, and protecting and enhancing the places we care for.
In 2022 we were pleased to become a member of Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations – the National membership organisation for the voluntary sector.
